SHAFR welcomes applications for participants in a one-day second book workshop scheduled to take place on June 15, 2022—right before the SHAFR Annual Meeting in New Orleans. This initiative is aimed at mid-career scholars who are researching/writing their second book and who would like to have a productive environment in which to receive feedback on their work.
Participants will be part of a group of four peers; they will give comments to others and receive feedback themselves. They will also have the opportunity to speak to a mentor about their project and how to progress towards publication and to share their ongoing work with editors from major presses.
Selection process: The screening committee (formed by three members of the Committee on Women in SHAFR plus two other experienced SHAFR scholars) will select twelve participants. Applications will be assessed on the strength of their proposal and on their membership in a “priority group.” Participants may workshop a book chapter, an introduction, or a book proposal and will provide their draft by May 27, 2022.
Timeline:
- May 9, 2022 - Initial proposals due. Participants are asked to submit a curriculum vitae and a two-page project summary, along with a one-paragraph explanation of why this experience would be helpful/what they hope to achieve through it. This can also include information about membership in one or more of the following “priority groups”:
• Members of underrepresented groups (in terms of gender, race, class, and accessibility)
• People with high teaching and administrative loads
• People who lack a conducive research and mentoring environment. This includes campuses that have not made accommodations for the impact of COVID on research agendas.
• People with caregiving responsibilities (eldercare or child care) and/or COVID era caregiving disruptions.
- Accepted Participants will be notified by May 1.
- Materials will be due to mentors for review May 27.
