On Thursday, May 1, 2025, the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS), the American Historical Association (AHA), and the Modern Language Association (MLA) filed a lawsuit in federal district court seeking to reverse recent actions that threaten to devastate the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).
The ACLS, AHA, and MLA are organizations represented on the National Humanities Alliance (NHA) executive committee. All three organizations helped to found NHA in 1981 to allow humanities organizations to speak with one voice in support of the National Endowment for the Humanities. After an extensive evaluation of potential pathways, we determined this suit is the most expeditious course for reversing the administration’s actions, including the elimination of grant programs, staff, and entire divisions and programs. As organizations with cancelled grants, the ACLS, AHA, and MLA have standing to bring this suit. Read more about the suit here.

Since we issued our advocacy alert on April 1, more than 24,000 advocates have sent more than 78,000 emails to Members of Congress. In addition, NHA has facilitated direct outreach to Congressional staff for more than 400 NEH grantees whose funding was terminated. And we have continued our own direct outreach to allies on the Hill. Members of Congress and their staff remain engaged in this fight for the NEH, and we are grateful for their bipartisan support of the agency.
