The Historian is responsible under law for publication of the documentary series Foreign Relations of the United States, the official record of U. S. foreign policy.  He/she also superintends the preparation of historical research, studies on U. S. foreign policy and diplomacy for Department Principals, bureaus, posts, and officers in support of current foreign policy initiatives, and historical outreach programs in support of Department and Bureau of Public Affairs goals and objectives. 

Responsibilities

Directs work of the Office of the Historian, which is responsible under law for preparation and publication of the Foreign Relations of the United States series, the official record of United States foreign policy and diplomacy.

Directs Office programs concerning the research and writing of historical studies on U. S. foreign policy and diplomacy.

Serves as Executive Secretary of the Department's Advisory Committee on Historical Diplomatic Documentation.

Provides historical context to the Secretary of State and to the Secretary's principal advisers on current foreign policy questions.
Performs liaison functions within the Department and with counterpart organizations in other government agencies and with other countries.

Represents the Department of State as a member of the National Historical Publications and Records Commission.
